Release occupies a suspended moment between holding on and letting go. The upward-facing figure emerges through layered passages of warm neutral, charcoal and earth tones, yet her boundaries remain deliberately unstable. Form gives way to gesture as areas of the body dissolve into vertical marks and surrounding colour, only to reappear elsewhere.

Fragments of genuine 23K gold leaf interrupt the surface at unexpected points. Some appear embedded within the figure while others sit at its edges, creating moments of illumination without establishing a fixed path through the composition. As the surrounding light changes, the reflective gold shifts against the quieter painted surfaces, reinforcing the sense of emergence and disappearance.

The upward orientation of the face introduces a sense of surrender and possibility without prescribing what has been relinquished or what might follow. Dreamlike and emotionally ambiguous, Release remains within the transition itself - the point at which certainty begins to soften and something new can open.

Of the three works selected for Los Angeles, Release moves furthest into abstraction. It reflects Lisa Rees' growing interest in allowing the figure to become less descriptive and more psychological, using fragmentation, material and atmosphere to explore transformation without requiring a resolved narrative.
