The River Within captures a moment of quiet transformation — where the figure appears to emerge from, and simultaneously dissolve into, a shifting landscape of darkness, light and gold.

A luminous passage of 23K gold leaf travels through the composition like an internal current, tracing the contours of the figure before flowing beyond her. Against the deep black ground, layers of white, charcoal and reflective gold create a sense of movement that changes with the surrounding light and the viewer's perspective.

There is both strength and vulnerability within the work. The figure is present yet partially obscured, allowing the painting to explore what lies beneath the surface — the experiences, emotions and transformations that shape us, even when they remain unseen.

Created using acrylic, mixed media, sculptural texture and genuine 23K gold leaf on canvas, The River Within has a tactile, dimensional quality that cannot be fully captured in photography. The gold shifts from subtle warmth to brilliant reflection as light moves across the surface, making the artwork continually change within its environment.

The River Within was created as one of three original works selected for Voltage of Hope, presented by The Pop-Up Project at Mica Studios, Los Angeles, 19–24 September 2026.

The work represents an evolution in Lisa Rees' contemporary figurative practice, bringing together atmospheric abstraction, the human form and precious metal to explore movement, transformation and emotional depth.
