About the Artwork
The Recline explores the space between composure and surrender, presenting the female form through a language that is both figurative and increasingly abstract.
The elongated reclining figure remains recognisable, yet its form is constructed through fragmented passages of stone, charcoal, cream and reflective gold. Rather than relying on conventional modelling, shifts in surface, colour and texture establish the body and allow sections of it to move between solidity and abstraction.
Gold appears throughout the composition not simply as embellishment, but as interruption, catching light, breaking through darker passages and altering the work as the viewing position changes.
There is confidence in the figure's physical presence, but also stillness. Her closed eyes and extended posture resist a fixed narrative, leaving the emotional state deliberately unresolved.
Within Lisa Rees' evolving practice, The Recline forms a bridge between her earlier figurative work and a growing interest in abstraction, materiality and reducing the figure to its most expressive elements.
Surface & Material
Built through acrylic, mixed media, dimensional passages and hand-applied 23K genuine gold leaf, The Recline has a distinctly tactile surface.
Changes in relief become particularly visible under directional light, while the gold shifts between bright reflection and muted warmth as the viewer moves around the work. These changing surface qualities form an integral part of experiencing the original painting.

Overview
A large-format horizontal figurative painting featuring an elongated reclining female form extending across a dark, textured ground.
The figure is constructed through fragmented passages of cream, stone, taupe, charcoal and black, with areas of the body moving between clear definition and painterly abstraction. Her head tilts gently back with closed eyes, creating a quiet focal point within the composition.
Hand-applied gold leaf travels across and around the figure in irregular reflective passages, contrasting with the predominantly matte neutral and charcoal surfaces.
Layered acrylic and mixed media create visible relief throughout the work, including sculptural, scale-like textural passages across sections of the body. Palette-knife marks, broken edges and changing surface depths prevent the figure from appearing conventionally modelled or overly resolved.
The composition is predominantly monochromatic, with warm gold providing the primary contrast and responding visibly to changes in surrounding light.
